Job Description
The Schmidt Ocean Institute is currently seeking highly experienced candidates for the position of Marine Science and Survey Technician. The opening is a unique opportunity to come aboard this new organization to fulfill a full-time seagoing position in support of a global operating 275’ oceanographic research ship. The ship, the RV FALKOR, was formerly a fisheries enforcement vessel and is currently undergoing a major refit / conversion. The Marine Technician shall be closely involved in assisting the refit team at the shipyard in Germnay and the shoreside staff in the US in the hands-on management of the installation of scientific echo sounding equipment, development and implementation of the Scientific Computer System, and the purchasing and setup of all required scientific instrumentation, equipment and tools necessary to outfit a global operating general purpose research ship. It is expected that the Marine Technician will also participate in the planning of the required shakedown cruises and work closely with the scientific community to assist the organization manage the build-up of the shipboard resources. The successful applicant may be required to join the ship’s crew in Germany and relocate to the shipyard during the final outfitting period. The Marine Technician may be required to work remotely when not sailing aboard the ship. After the shakedown cruises the Marine Technician will provide shipboard technical and some science logistical support for all RV FALKOR science cruise-related activities including, but not limited to pre-cruise planning and set-up, on-shore and off-shore scientific technical support of all shared-use instrumentation and equipment, and cruise mobilization and demobilization. Job Qualifications
Requirements:
• Advanced degree in marine science, physical or engineering science or a combination of technical schooling and job experience.
• All citizenships welcomed to apply. Non-US applicants must have a B-1 Visa to work in the United States.
• Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing the English language.
Experience Required:
• Development and implementation of a shipboard Science Computer Systems (e.g. NOAA’s Science Computer System version 4.x)
• Installation, testing, operation, interpretation and maintenance of the following echo sounding systems:
Kongsberg mulitbeam and single beam echo sounders
Simrad fishery research system
Knudsen sub-bottom profiling system
Teledyne ADCPs
Sonarydyne Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) system
• Installation, testing, operation, interpretation and maintenance of the following additional science systems:
Meteorological monitoring systems
Science navigation systems (e.g. Winfrog)
Winch and wire monitoring systems (e.g. MTNW LCI-90i)
Thermosalinographs (e.g. SBE 45)
CTDs, Rosettes and Nisken bottles
Forward Looking Sonar
• Extensive at-sea experience aboard ocean or global class research vessels supporting shipboard science.
• Familiar in use of science winches (CTD, hydrographic and trawl)
• Familiar in the operation of ROVs and AUVs and management of acquired data.
• Demonstrated knowledge of marine electronic circuitry.
• Advanced computer literacy required. Computer programming and Windows based networking skills.
• Experienced in use of power tools.
