LinkQuest Rolls Out FlowScout 600 Long-range Acoustic Flow Meter
LinkQuest Inc., San Diego, California, recently rolled out the FlowScout 600 acoustic flow meter based on innovative acoustic Doppler technology. The single-beam FlowScout 600 acoustic flow meter is capable of reaching up to 110 meters in range with an accuracy of up to 0.5% +/- 2.0 mm/s. The operating frequency of the FlowScout 600 system is 600 kHz. The standard depth rating of the system is 100 meters. The FlowQuest system is typically used to precisely measure water velocities in water channels and rivers. It can be easily installed on an irrigation channel bank, a bridge abutment, or a river bank. LinkQuest has invested extensively in state-of-the-art R&D and production technologies to reduce the overall system cost, and has ensured high cost effectiveness of the FlowScout 600 system for very large scale deployments for water resource management and environmental monitoring. With its highly competitive cost and high accuracy, the FlowScout 600 system is a perfect choice for long-term real-time monitoring of water flow and velocities in water channels, rivers, ports, harbors and estuaries.www.link-quest.com
New Coral Reef Book Reveals the Missing Link in the Health of Earth's Most Ancient Biodiverse Ecosystems
For millennia, coral reefs have flourished as one of the planet’s most magnificent natural wonders. As Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem–surpassing even the rainforests–they are home to a cooperative network ranging from immense fish to sunlight-capturing algae to invisible microbes. Coral Reefs In The Microbial Seas: The Influence of Fishing, Nutrients, Bacteria, Viruses, and Climate Change on Nature’s Most Wondrous Constructs is the first book to unveil the complete picture of how these relationships uphold coral reef health and just how critical the unseen role of microbes are on this ecosystem.
Internationally acclaimed and award-winning scientist Forest Rohwer tells the untold story of coral reefs that has puzzled investigators for decades by illuminating the interrelationships among the sharks, the microbes and the corals and how disturbances such as human activity challenge this delicate balance. With accessible prose and compelling illustrations, “this book brilliantly captures the lives of both coral reefs and the scientists that study them. It is a 21st century version of the Log from the Sea of Cortez – full of wisdom and humor,” praises Nancy Knowlton, Ph.D., holder of the Sant Chair in Marine Science at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
Coral Reefs In The Microbial Seas is published by Plaid Press, a subsidiary of Plaid Multimedia that specializes in scientific communication.

Magnalight.com Adds Solar Powered LED Area Light with Rechargeable 12 Hour Battery
Larson Electronics’ magnalight.com has announced the addition of the SPLED-5 solar powered area light with rechargeable 12 hour run time battery. The SPLED-5 LED light can be surface mounted or affixed to a pole or rail. The 8 watt solar panel powers a 5 watt LED light that dims and brightens automatically based on an integrated motion detector. An integrated day and night sensor will trigger the light to come on in dim mode once the ambient light reaches a low lumens threshold, like late evening or dusk.
This solar powered, rechargeable LED light is ideal for operators who need a reasonable amount of illumination in areas where access to established electric power is limited or costly to implement,” said Rob Bresnahan with Larson Electronics’ magnalight.com. “From a commercial standpoint, job site security, remote utility locations and other temporary or low access areas are ideal applications for the SPLED-5 solar powered, rechargeable LED light. Plus, there is the added benefit of high vibration tolerance on no maintenance related to re-lamping.
